Why Your RAM Promaster is Having Transmission Issues

Broken ProMasters are sitting on dealer lots all over the country. Let’s dive into why.

The Ram ProMaster Transmission is probably the most poorly designed transmission ever manufactured by Chrysler. The ProMaster brought with it many beefed-up features, with a focus on the suspension, wheels, and axle assemblies for their new models. However, with these updates, they failed to update the muscle powering this much heavier vehicle: the transmission.

The Ram ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500 are all powered by the 62TE Automatic Transmission, which is almost the same as the 604 Automatic Transmission, used in the earlier Dodge and Chrysler minivans. So Ram has kept an undersized, old Dodge Caravan transmission in the much heavier Ram ProMaster, leading to a high rate of transmission failure.

So how does transmission failure occur? Torque Converter failure is the primary failure point in most of these transmissions, likely due to the heavy payloads these delivery and works vans are utilized for. Basically, as is, these transmissions are not up to the task.

How do we come in? Since replacement transmissions are not available through Dodge, Northampton Transmission has seen a huge rise in requests for this model – and we’ve answered the call. Our specialists rebuild the 62TE transmission and replace the inadequate Dodge Torque convertor to help remedy premature transmission failure.
